Abstract:

The last years have witnessed the flourishing of participatory experiments in Latin America, and along with that a corresponding specialized scholarship has also prospered. The success of the first participatory budgeting experiences brought together a number of likewise successful studies, which quickly turned Latin America into a distinct empirical source to feed studies on participatory democracy. However, a quite significant part of the international debate on participatory innovations in Latin America focuses on case studies of on one sole experiment, the participatory budgeting, and quite frequently on one single country, Brazil. Few comparative studies have been pursued so far, and the big picture of participatory democracy in the region is still missing. This paper aims at filling this gap.
