Towards a Black German Art Practice: Diasporic Translation in the Works of Marc Brandenburg

Abstract:

Departing from a close analysis of paintings, sculptures, and drawings by Berlin-based artist Marc Brandenburg, my paper probes the notion of a Black German art practice. How does one define such a concept art within a larger diasporic framework? To what extent do Black British and African American concepts of racialized identity in visual culture both advance and hamper our understanding of a Black German Art practice? Highlighting a plethora of aesthetic, historical, social, and political traces in the works by this Black German artist, my presentation identifies a series of cross-cultural translations, which, in turn, outline the complex and often contradictory theoretical parameters of a Black German visual culture in a global, diasporic context.
