Simulations as a Tool for Fostering an Understanding of Global Diversity
Unformatted Document Text:  Simulations can serve as a powerful tool for providing students with a first cut at understanding and responding to issues stemming from diversity and clashing perspectives at the global level. They help students step outside of themselves and approach problem solving situations from the perspective of another. Because the simulations used here focus on negotiations they place a premium on reaching agreement and reduce the incentive for posturing. At the same time, because this is an active learning experience, the instructor must be willing to allow a negotiation to fail. While these simulations are decidedly “low tech” they can easily be supplement by using Blackboard or other electronic mediums to foster exchanges outside of the classroom if the instructor wishes or has a different set of course objectives. As a senior capstone experience the simulations course offers student a challenging alternative to the standard format of reading text material and producing a lengthy research paper. The traditional seminar provides students interested in graduate school an excellent preparatory experience. For those not interested in continuing their education this format is often off-putting. It is one they see as having little value for them. The simulations course actively engages them in the material and prompts them to learn lessons from these negotiations.
