Benefits of Writing Workshop to Applicants to a College of Pharmacy

Abstract:

Many colleges of pharmacy across the United States require an on-site essay during the interview process. Often time, the essay is a source of anxiety for the applicants. In order to ease anxiety, we provided a workshop to provide candidates a refresher on essay writing. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of attending a writing workshop on the writing scores on the on-site essay. All applicants granted an interview to the Cooperative Pharmacy Program (CPP) were invited to attend a writing workshop. The writing workshop was held by a graduate English major from the Learning Assistance Center on campus. The students were given a basic overview of the five-paragraph essay. They were given time to ask questions. They then had a stimulated essay writing experience. The on-site essays were blinded and graded by at least two members of the admission committee. The scores ranged from 1-6 with 6 being the best score. The members of the committee did not know who attended the workshop. Data was analyzed using a student’s t-test to asses if there was an overall difference in the average of on-site essay scores between the students attending the workshop and those who did not. Students who attended the workshop scored higher on the writing samples than those who did not (3.5 and 3.0 respectively), although the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.054). The writing workshop may be beneficial to students preparing for a pharmacy school interview.
