Worked examples of methods to make sense out of place and place out of the senses

Abstract:

What happens when people are asked to 'turn on their senses' instead of sharing their thoughts through interviews or focus groups? In what 'sense' does this increase our understanding on how people connect to their living environment? What are the benefits and challenges related to a multisensory engagement of research participants in a public space? These and other questions were explored in a set of case studies conducted in a neighbourhood in development of a medium size Flemish city. A walking interview was conducted with inhabitants living in and artists connected to the neighbourhood. The walk included stops at predefined cartographic nodes on a map where the senses were intentionally and actively used to generate meaning. The participants (a) helped us create narratives or (b) integrated their personal analysis of what they had experienced during the walk in a piece of art. Both pathways will be illustrated.
