Abstract:

The private security is one massive anticrime resource governments have not yet tapped into. Today it is an $104 billion industry, and the ratio of private security employees to public law enforcement is 3:1. However, the effects of private security industry to prevent crime have not been carefully evaluated. Few scientifically driven investigations have examined the effectiveness of crime prevention by private security in general. In particular, the deterrent effect of burglary alarm systems and their impact on crime in residential areas has not been adequately researched. This presentation will be about the deterrent effect of home burglar alarm system on crime and criminal behavior. This study will be based on the results of secondary data analyses from two research sites in New Jersey. Various statistical techniques will be implemented and the GIS will be used to examine displacement of crime and diffusion of benefits.
