Multiple Stories, Multiple Discourses, Multiple Perspectives: Using Multiadic Interview Designs

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Critics of interview methods often point to how interviews only capture one participant's perspective; or that interviews are limited in that they tend to reflect a particular discourse, that of the interviewer and the interviewed. This paper presents multiadic interviewing and analysis, the approach of interviewing multiple participants apart and together using the same or a similar interview protocol to gain a sense of how absence and presence of others affects interview discourses. Rather than using multiple interviews as a simple validity tool seeking truth, this method instead helps to unpack how multiple social scenes unpack multiple truths; and that designing interviews with these multiple social interactions in mind will allow for a richer data set with more possibilities to emerge.
