| |
| | Unformatted Document Text:
Contribution This work relates to the conference strand “Build Consensus on Professional Issues.” The focus of the presentation is on how adjunct faculty impact standards compliance. The work specifically addresses NCATE Standard 5: Faculty Qualifications, Performance, and Development and Standard 2: Assessment System and Unit Operations. Additionally, adjunct impact will be considered for each of the remaining standards. Every NCATE standard is impacted by adjunct employment: candidate preparation, assessment, field and clinical experiences, diversity, faculty qualifications, and governance.
Relevance This work has strong implications for policy. Policy must be developed to ensure that utilization of adjunct faculty does not adversely impact program and unit integrity. Data from the unit assessment system can be used to inform policy and practice regarding adjunct faculty utilization and professional development. Successful practices utilizing adjunct faculty result when policy and professional development are in place. Used judiciously, adjunct faculty can strengthen and enhance the unit’s programs.
Implication for Action NCATE coordinators, deans, and department heads will be able provide the leadership and professional development required to utilize adjunct faculty in a way that positively impacts the unit’s mission, goals, and assessment system.
Section II: Outcomes and Methods Learner/participant outcomes The participants will learn the impact, both positive, and negative, of adjunct utilization on NCATE Standards compliance. The participants will also learn ways to increase the benefits of using part time faculty, while maintaining standards compliance.
MethodsThis twenty minute interactive paper session will utilize Power Point both as a guide to both presenters and participants. Each standard will be discussed in light of the impact of adjunct faculty on that standard. Participants are welcome to join in the discussion, within the time constraints of the presentation. The session will close with “lessons learned.”
