War Within Reason: Realism, Romanticism, and the Ethics of War

WAR WITHIN REASON:
REALISM, ROMANTICISM, AND THE ETHICS OF WAR
ABSTRACT
The argument this paper seeks to develop is that Thomistic and Augustinian versions of the just war tradition, whilst originally realist in
their respective understandings of statehood and power, are fatally prey to idealism through the legalism that has come to haunt the former and the
self-righteousness that periodically overwhelms the latter. Secularisation of the tradition runs similar risks through conflation of law and morality
in the so-called war convention and through various distortions and temptations of communitarianism. A different kind of realism, consisting
in close observation of cultural representations of modern warfare offers to provide legitimation for a renewed moral comprehension of warfare in
the radically changed conditions created by unipolarity, arms proliferation, and mass media. This, in turn, may help rescue
humanitarian law from the Scylla of formalism and the Charybdis of command by providing the moral framework for a recovery of casuistry.
