Abstract:
|
The paper examines Machiavelli's corpus to argue that he has an aesthetic conception of politics and power. Beginning with an analysis of his literary works, such as the Golden Ass, the author claims that the Florentine must be understood in light of his poetic and artistic sensibility. This allows us to see that he is more than merely a 'teacher of evil' or 'lover of freedom.' Machiavelli founds an aesthetic political theory by writing literature, employing rhetoric, and utilitizing categories borrowed from modern aesthetic theory to understand politics. This allows us a view of the Florentine that is far from either a scientific or ethical characterization of his worldview. |
