Violent Death After Communism
Unformatted Document Text:  are not adequately understood when the death-causing lawlessness and violence are treated as transitional phenomena, resulting from the upheavals and uncertainty of early post-communism. The transitional upheaval and dislocation certainly help us understand the surge in violent deaths in the region as a whole, but are of limited usefulness with regard to cross-national differences. Second, the factors that appear to be associated with violent deaths are either historical (urban population shares, historic purposeful death rates, divorce rates, and in part, ethno-linguistic fractionalization), or durable (all of the above plus inequality), rather than “new” and potentially temporary consequences of economic crises. This ought to diminish the confidence that further economic, political or legal reforms are capable of ameliorating the violent death problem on their own.
