The survey from Pew asks people to what extent they agreed with these statements, among others: “The best way to ensure
peace is through military strength” “The criminal justice system should try to rehabilitate criminals, not just punish them.”

Typically, these surveys include more than 2,000 interviews. These are grouped according to whether the respondent is
part of the “general public” or a “leadership” tier. The latter includes people in senior positions in government, business, the medias and academia. As our interest is with the body of US society, we have included both groups in our analysis.

Technically, in the survey, these are labeled as “Independents.”
