Abstract:
|
The presidency is generally viewed as a single institution united behind a shared perspective and focused on a single mission. However, the stoic exterior of the White House conceals a variety of political, personal, and institutional cleavages. While these internal divisions usually can not be observed, it may be possible to reveal them through an examination of changes to drafts of presidential speeches.
This study uses DICTION software produce a quantitative analysis of changes in presidential speeches as they move through the drafting and vetting process. Drafts of presidential addresses from the archives of the Roosevelt and Reagan presidential libraries are used to illustrate the different perspectives within the White House. |
