U.N. Agency Says Iran May Present Nuclear
Threat
By
ELAINE SCIOLINO
Iran has accelerated its nuclear fuel enrichment activities and rejected demands of international inspectors to explain evidence that has raised suspicions of a nuclear weapons program, according to a report by a United Nations agency. Hardliners in Iran's government say that they have no intention of abiding by U.N. prohibitions on the spread of WMD's, which they argue compromise their national sovereignty.
Today's announcement raises fears that Tehran is moving closer to having a nuclear bomb, although Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted today they are only seeking nuclear energy. But he said, to be powerful, Iran must be equipped with all forms of advanced technologies. Why now? Experts say Iran feels surrounded. US forces on its borders in Iraq and Afghanistan, Israel with a secret nuclear program not far. In fact, some US and Israel officials suspect Iran's secret facilities may be only months from producing enough nuclear material for a bomb.
Speaking in response to the report, United States ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton stated, "We believe that, if allowed to continue on the present course, Iran will have nuclear weapons capability in less than one year. I can assure you we're not going to allow America's national security to be dependent on the good faith of a group of fanatic mullahs seeking nuclear weapons. We will not allow a foreign power to threaten Americans' lives with weapons of mass destruction. The United Nations has documented Iran's state-sponsored support of Islamist terrorist organizations. "
The U.N. report laid out a long list of fresh examples in which it said Iran had stonewalled the agency, responding with incomplete and ambiguous answers and refusing repeated requests to turn over documents and information. It called it ''regrettable and a matter of concern'' that Iran has not been more forthcoming after three years of intensive agency verification.
The documents make reference to a secretive entity in Iran called the Green Salt Project, and seem to suggest that the project established ''administrative interconnections'' between Iran's uranium processing and weapons delivery systems. If accurate, the documents would be the first to tie what Iran says is its purely civilian nuclear program to military activities.
