Abstract:

While some studies of Latino political participation have examined the impact of socioeconomic status, mobilization, and group consciousness on Latino political participation, little empirical research has investigated the effects of race. In this paper, I hypothesize that racial identification within the Latino community influences political participation. The results of ordinary least squares models show that race is a modest yet significant predictor of Latino participation. The findings suggest that further examination of the personal and social construction of race is necessary to better understand the dynamics of Latino political behavior.
