A stark illustration of the lack of such capacity occurred in July 2005, when several organisations
were asked by the state planning authorities to comment on proposals for an extensive and
controversial motorway development scheme to run across the country. The two most prominent
organisations in the country, YRBL and Ekotim both felt they lacked the resources to make comments
by the required deadline and declined to comment.

Support Group Green (Grupa za podrska) was established in April 2004 with the aim of stopping the
canyon road and other environmentally hazardous projects in the region. The coalition is an eclectic
mix of organisations, including mountaineering organisations, the Ornithology Society of BiH, and
caving clubs, all of whom feel affected by the canyon road construction.

The Rakitnica canyon, situated in the south west of BiH is one of the last unspoilt areas in Europe
and has had protected status since 1966. The canyon, which is an 800-metre drop, contains magnificent
rock formations and is home to numerous endangered species. Information on SGG was obtained from
several interviews with Thierry Joubert and Tim Clancy (Green Visions, part of the SGG network) and
Kenan Muftic (SGG co-ordinator) during the period March 2004 – December 2005.
