A Comparison of Male and Female Directors in Pornography: What Happens When Women Are at the Helm?
Unformatted Document Text:  Pornography Directors 2 What Happens When Women Are at the Helm? Submitted to: International Communication Association Popular Communication Division April 30, 2006 Abstract Pornography is a lucrative business with an annual revenue of twelve billion dollars, a 160-fold increase since 1985. Although pornography is still mainly a man's world – produced by and for men – there has been an increase in female participation, both as audience members and as directors and producers. This current study takes on an inquiry that has never been studied before: does the content in popular pornographic videos created by female directors differ from that of their male counterparts? And, if so, how is it different? These questions are addressed through the examination of the content of top-renting adult videos in 2005, as identified in Adult Video News, by both male and female directors. Results show these popular pornographic videos, regardless of the gender of their creators, have high levels of verbal and physical aggression, and the targets are almost always females who most often express pleasure or indifference when violated. There is nearly no difference between the content created by male or female directors, except that the latter portray significantly more violence between female characters.

Abstract
Pornography is a lucrative business with an annual revenue of twelve billion
dollars, a 160-fold increase since 1985. Although pornography is still mainly a man's
world – produced by and for men – there has been an increase in female participation,
both as audience members and as directors and producers. This current study takes on an
inquiry that has never been studied before: does the content in popular pornographic
videos created by female directors differ from that of their male counterparts? And, if so,
how is it different? These questions are addressed through the examination of the content
of top-renting adult videos in 2005, as identified in Adult Video News, by both male and
female directors. Results show these popular pornographic videos, regardless of the
gender of their creators, have high levels of verbal and physical aggression, and the
targets are almost always females who most often express pleasure or indifference when
violated. There is nearly no difference between the content created by male or female
directors, except that the latter portray significantly more violence between female
characters.
