Publication Type: Session Presentation Abstract: 'El español', as Spanish language is known today, is the third language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and English, with more than 400 million native speakers. In this presentation we will chart the historical and cultural events that deeply influenced the shaping of Spanish from its Indo-European roots to its present form, outlining the circumstances under which Spanish has become the most widely spoken and studied romance language (46 million students) in the world. |
