Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Time, as a carrier of significance, may shape power relations which are present in every social interaction. Law can produce autonomous individuals as bearers of rights only when they can conceive themselves as authors of laws to which they are subject as private legal persons. Both statements are inconceivable unless participants in social interactions are coeval, that is, share the same Time. In this paper I discuss some changes in the way Time is conceived by homeless boys and girls, sometimes involved in drug-dealing economy, in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. This new intersubjective Time, as well as the new politics of space that comes with it, produces a new frame of experience where the punishments that constitute the base of Brazilian mainstream legal system are emptied of meaning and force. The key concept for the analysis is "Vertiginous Time". It is a Time lived in a shorter time scale, which produces a life lives in a much faster pace. In this Time, one is born, grows up, constitutes a family, has children and dies in an average time-span of around twenty years. These boys and girls live in a time scale four times shorter than the one with which our legal system was conceived to deal. So, a Law system that relies on punishments seen as the "death" of the transgressor and the "birth" of the new individual does not match the temporality of those to whom it is asserted.
