Abstract:

Prevalence of mental health disorders is higher among persons living with HIV/AIDS than in the general population.
Untreated disorder has negative impact on individuals and communities with regard to individualsÂ’ health and psychosocial outcomes as well as increasing health care costs and social burden. Mental health disorders are treatable; however, the majority of persons with mental health needs do not receive needed treatments or services. This paper will present the history of an academic, provider, public policy, and patient collaboration to better understand the mental health needs of persons living with HIV in New York City, and to develop tools to increase recognition of mental health needs and improve delivery of care.
