Abstract:

Black. White., a documentary style reality TV program which aired on FX in March 2006, is an important site of cultural production because of its focus on representations of race and racism. The purpose of this paper is to ask what kind of cultural work is accomplished in a project that bridges the documentary and RTV genres. Black. White. has the potential for producing many different readings, but for this paper I examine three: 1) the authentication of race through racial prototypes and narrative scripts; 2) the process of being othered and othering through whiteness; and 3) the importance of the development of cultural memory in understanding multiple subject-positions.
