Abstract:

For nearly a century rural sociologists have depended upon sample surveys to understand the opinions and behaviors of rural people. A myriad of changes in how quality samples can be obtained, the effectiveness of various survey modes (telephone, mail and web) in reaching people, and changes in relative costs, are dramatically reshaping the survey landscape. In this paper I will overview the nature of these changes, and their implications for conducting quality sample surveys in the 21st century. Results from a series of experiments involving mail, web and telephone surveys conducted by the author between 2002 and 2007 will be summarized as a basis for predicting future directions in designing and conducting high quality sample surveys.
