Abstract:

Police officers serve an extremely important function in society, namely enforcing and protecting the rule of law and public safety. The violent victimization of police officers is not a frequent event, but police officers do face a comparatively higher occupational risk of violent victimization than individuals employed in other occupations. The serious assault of even a single police officer can have a significant impact on the entire department, how the officers of that department conduct business, and police-community relations. Therefore, it is imperative that the violent victimization of police officers is adequately and accurately understood.
The proposed exploratory research will create a multi-factorial model, including data on the assaulted police officers, assailants, environment, and situational attributes, and examine the differential levels of exposure to dangerous situations and proximity to offenders. This research will utilize a case study method to examine the aggravated assaults on officers of the Newark Police Department. Cluster analysis will be used to identify the causal factors or variables in the armed aggravated assault of police officers. The overall purpose of this research is to identify the explanatory factors for this unique form of violence. The value of this analysis is that it may serve to demonstrate a need for additional or specialized training, identify who should receive that training, and appropriate training content.
