Abstract

The Correlates of War Diplomatic Exchange data set has been extended to 2005. This
data set captures diplomatic interactions between interstate system members from 1816
onwards. In this paper, I highlight the main findings that emerge from this data set by
providing information on diplomatic representation for the 1990-2005 era. Singer and
Small (1966) started gathering the data over forty years ago. Thus, I will also attempt to
reacquaint scholars with this data set by discussing its coding rules and limitations. I will
finally discuss why conflict scholars need to consider such bilateral exchanges more in
their work and I will suggest different ways in which this data set can be used in future
studies.
