Abstract:

Growing literature in the U.S. suggests strong relationship between organizational culture and law enforcement officers’ outlook on community orientated policing. However, very little research is done to examine if police officers in other countries have similar disposition to the type of work that is typically considered community oriented policing with out the organizational endorsement or official implementation of community policing as we know in the U.S. The aim of this paper is two fold. First, we compare law enforcement officers’ attitudes toward police officers’ conceptions of police work in Turkey and the U.S. with specific attention to police work that relates to order maintenance and community oriented police work. Secondly, we examine the nature of organizational cultures of police organizations in these two countries and to what extent they influence officers’ conception of community oriented policing activities.
