Abstract:

This study examines the impact of family structure on the victimization of domestic violence and the victims’ reaction to the incident with particular attention to abuse of older adults. The impact of victims’ age and family structure are not well considered in the study of domestic violence. As the population ages, more and more households will have elderly members who may be dependent upon the family members with whom they live. The dependency of victims to the family member and the age of victims are important in the chance of victimization and victims’ reaction to the incident. Care-giving can be stressful and increase the likelihood of abuse, and the dependency and social norm about the family members with whom the older adult live with have an impact on the victims’ decision about the incident. Family structure, which illustrates the dependency of victims to the family members, is important in the study of domestic violence, especially in domestic elder abuse. It is possible to think that the different picture of family structure with regards to whom potential victims live is related to the victimization and victims' reaction to the incident.
This paper examines the impact of different family structure in the victimization and victims’ reaction across different age group of victims with NCVS 1992-2004 data.
