College Student Crime in a Community Context: Nature and Extent of Offending using Official Data

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

General patterns of college student crime have received surprisingly little research attention to date. Instead, prior research has primarily focused narrowly on specific criminal behaviors, such as stalking/harassment, sexual assault, and drug and alcohol offenses. Furthermore, very few studies have examined official reports of college student crime to determine the extent to which college students engage in criminal and delinquent behaviors. Therefore, this study aims to bridge the gap between officially reported and self-reported student crime by examining the criminality of college students based on official statistics. This study investigates a population that is typically understudied in comparison to individuals who do not attend college (the general public). Official crime statistics and other student information were collected and a population of college student offenders was obtained from a large southeastern university. Findings indicate gender differences among crime types and reflect the community shift toward prioritizing enforcement of alcohol-related crimes. Policy implications based on the research findings are discussed.
