Situational Characteristics of Case: Five dichotomous dummy variables measure police perceptions of the specific nature of the case, including whether police perceived the juvenile’s involvement in prostitution to be exploitative, the juvenile to be under the power or control of another individual, the juvenile to be in imminent danger, injured or harmed, whether some other factor(s) contributed to or was responsible for the youth’s involvement in prostitution and if law enforcement perceived the youth as able to consent to sexual relations. Each variable is coded 1 for yes, 0 for no, 98 for not applicable and 99 for unknown/DK. A nominal variable captures the type of prostitution the juvenile was engaged in during the incident in which the police responded to. Each case will be coded with one of the following types of prostitution: Street prostitute with pimp; Street, homeless or runaway youth (survival sex); Business front (massage parlor, escort service, dancers/clubs, brothel); Hotel, bar, call-girl prostitution; Gang related; Trafficked for purposes of prostitution; Prostituted by family member; Youth living at home (to earn $$ for luxuries/excitement); unknown (missing data). 44
