Stress and anxiety of teacher interns: Improving seminars and coursework to address these issues.

Relevance and implication for action
Stress and anxiety may negatively impact the work interns do in the field. If we
want our interns to be top performers and to positively impact student achievement in our school sites, then it is important that we assist them in reducing unwanted and unnecessary stressors. Furthermore, if we identify and address stressors early in the experience and find ways to address the causes before or during the internship, then we will produce more content and more effective new teachers. There are ways that colleges of education can help reduce or even eliminate intern stress and anxiety by recognizing these stressors and addressing them in coursework and in the intern seminar. The qualitative evidence from this study is important in that it informs our practice and provides exemplary models.
Thus far, as a direct result of the findings of this research changes are being made
to coursework and the intern seminar at one university. For example, a new seminar course is being designed that address the top five determinants of stress and anxiety of interns.
Section II: Outcomes and Methods
During the proposed roundtable discussion, participants will be engaged in 1.) a
brief overview of the research methodology, findings, and implications and, 2.) a discussion of the implications of this research on their own programs. The majority of the time will be allotted for open exchange of ideas and discussion.
