Abstract:
|
As an Environmental Education (EE) / Education For Sustainable Development (ESD) Program, the overall goal of Bridging the Gap is to assist in developing genuine attitude and value changes in learners, fostering not only increased environmental awareness but also a sense of empowerment and commitment to stewardship principles. The Program serves Grade Four students from Winnipeg’s Inner-City School District, many of whom are of Aboriginal. In this study, the Program is the intervention. The study seeks to modify the existing Bridging the Gap Program to ensure it adequately addresses knowledge objectives and learning outcomes from the science curriculum, while also effectively encouraging the development of environmentally responsible values, attitudes and behaviours. Using an action research approach, this study examines how the integration of traditional Aboriginal cultural ideas with science learning outcomes, affects student learning and the development of the capacity for and willingness to actively participation in sustainable living practices
The title “Bridging the Gap” has several inherent meanings. It implies that this study attempts to develop better understanding of disparities, inequalities and barriers. It addresses issues or “gaps” between Western Science and Aboriginal Science concepts and methods as well as EE/ESD learning (content) and the willingness to take responsible action (behaviour). Finally, as an action research study, it is “research in action” and seeks to overcome many of the noted obstacles involved in connecting research and practice. |
