Expanded Description
As models for teacher and administrative preparation have changed, so too has the paradigm
for graduate level preparation in school counseling. A national initiative in the late 1990’s
resulted in the design of a new vision for school counseling preparation which integrated the
attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to practice leadership and social justice advocacy in
schools with the affective skills in counseling and human development. Pre-service counselors
are trained to deliver effective programs that ensure that all students have equal access to and
the resources to succeed in quality academic programs. New vision school counselors provide
every student with the support needed to acquire skills in academic, career and personal/social
development. This session offers higher education administrators and faculty members the
awareness of what is involved to move from a traditional model of counselor preparation to a
transformed model for school counseling to better meet the needs of 21
