Abstract:

This study examines a newly created, innovative elementary education program within a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) University in the Southeast United States. The new program asserts that elementary education graduates will be more deeply prepared in the areas of math and science through extensive content courses, methods courses and field experiences. The authors of this paper examined the patterns of practice and reflection in the teaching of math and science by the initial cohort. The discussion will explore the strengths and weaknesses of the model and will seek feedback from the participants on how the findings influence the policies and direction of the program. In addition the authors hope to engage the participants in discussion about elementary teacher preparation in math and science.
