Above and Beyond: The Leonard Medical Graduates of Shaw University and the Black Hospital Movement

Abstract:

Although the legacies of the graduates of the medical schools of Howard University and Meharry have been well-chronicled, the powerful contributions of the graduates of the Leonard Medical School (formerly of Shaw University) warrant greater illumination. Many of the nearly four hundred graduates of the school made significant contributions as leaders of medical organizations and as founders of black hospitals.

Leonard graduates such as Drs. John A. Kenney, Cornelius Garland, A.M. Moore, Ulysses Bourne and others sought to rectify the obvious disparities in healthcare by founding black hospitals that served to provide a vital continuum of care for black doctors and patients.

This presentation will provide an overview of the contributions of several of the Leonard graduates to the early Black Hospital Movement in several states.
