Abstract:
|
It is common for law-related courses to be included within political science departments throughout the country. Academics with Ph.D.s in political science and joint degrees in law, as well as lawyers have taught these courses, including, for example, Constitutional Law. The close tie between lawyers and political scientists teaching law courses at undergraduate institutions has led to a pedagogical approach to teaching Constitutional Law that is a distilled version of the traditional law school Socratic, case-dialogue method. Implicit in this method is the notion that students must study numerous topics and an overwhelming number of legal cases in an effort to master the status of most, if not every, article of the U.S. Constitution. At the undergraduate level, this just is not practical. In fact, it contradicts recommendations and goals for undergraduate education and for the political science major as set forth in the Wahlke Report (1991). This paper proposes an interdisciplinary approach to teaching law-related political science courses that comports with undergraduate and political science goals and that is expressly skills-based. Using Constitutional Law as an example, the author proposes an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating methods and substance derived from a variety of disciplines including history, political science, gender studies and law. |
