Abstract:

In this paper, I try to analyze the constitution of the discourses on westernization in modern China in two dimensions. The first dimension touches on a diversity of ideologies present in the historical process. In this historical dimension, the westernization is taken as a response to an encounter with the event in the world. A historical consciousness reveals in this encounter a discrepancy with the tradition, but also an anxiety to meet the world. The second dimension considers the topological effects implied in the image of the West, including the self-image of the West (Europe). Not only the concept of Voegelin on history as encounter is significant, the idea of geophilosophy in Deleuze and the critique of Derrida on the “other heading” of Europe also help us to reflect on the formation of the place in contrast to the discourse on the westernization. A consideration open for the future suggests a possible position to take concerning the otherness felt in the modern Chinese minds. It is an elsewhere as a now-here waiting for the different form of life in the future of China within the world.
