Abstract:
|
In this paper, I take up the question of self-knowledge as presented by Michel de Montaigne in his Essays. Montaigne is at once an assiduous seeker of self-knowledge and a defender of two fundamental modern principles about the self: human individuality, on the one hand, and human autonomy, on the other. I use this paper to investigate whether the self can in fact be known on the basis of these premises. |

If we follow the philosophers we can try to understand ourselves on rational terms acknowledging our uniqueness but not according it inestimable worth; if we follow St. Augustine we are indeed unique and priceless but we do not belong to ourselves and must remain ultimately mysterious to ourselves.
