Abstract:

Gender ideology is a concept often used, but seldom interrogated. This paper analyzes the concept of gender ideology, and especially its most central elements of masculinism and feminalism. To do so, it considers the meaning of both gender and ideology, and locates gender ideology as an important political ideology. It draws upon feminist scholarship to show ways common disciplinary uses of “political ideology” mask masculinism’s existence; hence, I argue we should employ the concept of governing ideology in naming the usual left-right continuum. The analysis traces the noncontroversial conceptual evolution from patriarchy to masculinism, as well as the analytic advantages of moving from feminism to feminalism. Gray zone options related to emerging transgender scholarship are also detailed.

Gender Ideology: Masculinism Feminalism and Options in the Gray Zone By Georgia Duerst-Lahti Department of Political Science Beloit College Beloit WI 53536 duerstgj@beloit.edu Gender ideology is a concept often used but seldom interrogated. This paper analyzes the concept of gender ideology and especially its most central elements of masculinism and feminalism. To do so it considers the meaning of both gender and ideology and locates gender ideology as an important political ideology. It draws upon feminist scholarship to show
and details of each ideological variant. 14 Jane Junn (2007) however recognizes that sex difference comparisons may constitute an important first and provisional step toward a more sophisticated gender and/or intersectional analysis. 15 These familiar definitions were coined by Harold Lasswell and David Easton respectively. 16 I also analyzed words associated with femininity and found few. When they were used in 2004 they usually were applied negatively to John Kerry. 17 The only source I know might be found
