Abstract:

The paper suggests Voegelins The Greatness of Max Weber lecture provides a key to his philosophical attitude as witness to the truth in 1964 Hitler and the Germans lectures. I suggest reading those lectures with Kierkegaards three existential categories, aesthetic, ethical and religious in mind, keeping all of them in function to Manfred Henningsens interpretation of the lectures as aiming at a German metanoia. Taking examples from Hitler and the Germans, the question of Voegelin as philosophical witness to the truth is illustrated with some rare comments he made regarding his work as a philosopher. The paper concludes by suggesting that the generous notion of prophet Voegelin himself ascribes to classic and later writers can justifiably be applied to his role in delivering the Hitler and the Germans lectures.
