Abstract:

Do Political Theorists belong in political science departments? It is not immediately obvious that they do. Their work is marginalized by their colleagues and has an "odd man out" feeling in the major disciplinary journals. As important, theorists themselves often deride normal science approaches to political phenomenon as meaningless, trivial or impossible. Those theorists who care about being "political scientists" have defend their inclusion on the basis of the added value they bring to empirical work, to the historical place of political theory in the discipline, and to the intrinsic value of their enterprise. These claims may be true, but they fail to justify the inclusion of theory within the discipline. In this paper I argue for an offensive approach that explains why, and what kind of, theory is properly categorized as "political science." Such an approach means acknowledging and valuing the inderdisciplinarity of political theory but arguing that humanistic approaches belong in a different discipline. The stakes of the argument involve distributive justice and the accumulation of knowledge and proper understanding.
