Abstract:

Although The Collected Works of Eric Voegelin can hardly be considered a critical edition, the 34 volumes will undoubtedly make Eric Voegelins writings more accessible than ever. In addition, Voegelins correspondence with contemporaries such as Leo Strauss, Robert Heilman and Alfred Schtz is now also available in book form, while Voegelins original correspondence files, typescripts, notes, unpublished lectures etc. can easily be accessed at the Hoover Archives in Stanford. This primary material together with Geoffrey Prices International Bibliography (1921-2000) of works by and on Voegelin appear to give Voegelins oeuvre an availability and unity which afford us the opportunity to reflect on the thinkers contribution as a whole rather than to discuss selected ideas in isolation. The present essay aims to initiate such a reflection. |
