Abstract:
|
This study is based on semi-structured interviews with fourteen first-time fathers employed by southern and northeastern Research I institutions. Using grounded theory analysis, this paper explores how, when, and if father-scholars negotiate paternity leave. Specifically, it addresses how paternity leave is negotiated with the university, department, spouse, and self. Ultimately, we can use this knowledge in conjunction with the preexisting literature on Research I careers and work-family relationships to offer suggestions to universities and colleges on how to improve the resources and information they provide to faculty with children. |
