Abstract:
|
What are the religious and political attitudes of Muslim elites in Portugal? The first survey of Portuguese Muslim leaders provides preliminary answers. The survey design is based on Jytte Klausen’s (2005b) research in northern Europe. Respondents place a high value on their faith and believe that Islam can and should be lived out fully in Portugal and Europe. They state that they feel they belong to the national society and that they understand it well. Muslim leaders approve of multicultural policies and the establishment of multiple religious institutions (including Christian, Jewish, and Muslim); they disapprove of aggressive secularism and of the complete merging of religion and politics. Islamic and Western values are fully compatible in their view, but both Islamic and Western institutions and practices have changed and should change in the course of greater integration. Muslim intellectuals working in the west, political parties, and national policies on religious institutions have all influenced the attitudes of Muslim elites. |
