The Role of Authenticity in Children’s Memory and Suggestibility for a Stressful Event

Abstract:

Children’s memory for stressful events has been a crucial issue in legal cases. This study examined associations between memory for inoculations and several individual difference variables. Use of body diagrams to recount inoculations was also investigated. Age differences in memory performance were robust. Overall, children accurately answered interview questions, but two children made false accusations of sexual assault, when asked abuse-related misleading questions. Parental authenticity (i.e., higher scores on measures of exploration of and openness to discussion of internal states, true-self behavior, and intimate relationships) predicted children’s resistance to misleading questions. Body diagrams were associated with memory accuracy and inaccuracy.
