Cohesive Devices Management by Chinese Heritage Learners and Non-heritage Learners This project tries to contrastively analyze the managements of cohesive devices by Chinese Heritage Learners (CHLs) and Non-Heritage Learners (CNHLs) based on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) taxonomies of cohesive devices (reference substitution Ellipsis Conjunction and Lexical cohesion). Previous studies about cohesion show that different languages have preferences for some of the cohesive devices and neglect others (James 1980; Norment 1994; Yeh 2004). Therefore writers’ language backgrounds will determine to
devices in Chinese language. On the other hand this study discusses the discrepancy of cohesive devices managements by heritage and non-heritage learners. This may enable teachers to develop appropriate teaching methods in respond to different types of learners’ special needs. Reference: Halliday M. A. K. and R. Hasan. 1976. Cohesion in English.
