Peregrination to Filadelfia: Fray Servando in the Hispanophone Early Republic

Abstract:

This paper focuses on the brief sojourn to Filadelfia undertaken by Fray Servando Teresa de Mier in 1821. One of the most colorful, if mistreated, figures of the early republican period in the Americas, Mier was a Dominican friar defrocked for delivering a sermon on the Virgin of Guadalupe that his superiors found blasphemous. For much of his life Mier traveled throughout Europe on the run from the Inquisition. In 1821, he made his way from Havana to Philadelphia, possibly with Vicente Rocafuerte. This paper will situate Mier’s brief trip and his political work in relation to the Hispanophone print culture of the early republic. I plan to visit the archive with Mier’s papers and to offer a reading of Memoria Politico-Instructiva (Philadelphia, 1821), a book that has been attributed to Mier. I will be particularly interested in analyzing how the Philadelphia trip and the book Memoria give us insight into Mier’s evolving political perspective and its relation to constitutional theory coming out of the Hispanophone US context.
