Teaching Experience and Teacher-Training Needs of Young Political Scientists
Unformatted Document Text:  Country of study Yes, at my institution Yes, at another institution No, I did not have the opportunity No, there was an opportunity but I did not attend it Sweden 76.2 0 14.3 9.5 UK 80.6 0 3.2 16.1 Total 26.9 6.9 56.4 9.8 These results disclose that there is no sharp line that separated Eastern and Western Europe in terms of teacher training. On the contrary, similar percentage of respondents in old member states (35%) and new EU member countries (34%) passed some form of training and the results were approximately the same also for people reporting about lack of chances. The picture looks quite different if we take the regional distribution into account. While only some 35% of respondents from Baltic countries and Scandinavia reported having no opportunity for teacher training, the figure was 83% for young political scientists from Southern Europe. Southeastern Europe supports this trend as long as teaching training at one’s own institution is concerned even though in Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania a great number of students acquired pedagogic skills at some other institutions. All in all, North and South appear to be divided in terms of pedagogic education for political scientists. Similarities in teacher training interlink UK and Ireland with Nordic countries (with the exception of Finland) although geographically or historically they do not form one region. On the other hand, Germany and Nordic countries, which are geographically close are rather different in providing education to their political science professors. Central Europe remains the only region with strong geographical and historical links as well as analogous education standards for political science teachers. 16

These results disclose that there is no sharp line that separated Eastern and Western Europe
in terms of teacher training. On the contrary, similar percentage of respondents in old member
states (35%) and new EU member countries (34%) passed some form of training and the results
were approximately the same also for people reporting about lack of chances. The picture looks
quite different if we take the regional distribution into account. While only some 35% of
respondents from Baltic countries and Scandinavia reported having no opportunity for teacher
training, the figure was 83% for young political scientists from Southern Europe. Southeastern
Europe supports this trend as long as teaching training at one’s own institution is concerned even
though in Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania a great number of students acquired pedagogic skills
at some other institutions. All in all, North and South appear to be divided in terms of pedagogic
education for political scientists.
