Who produces the great teachers? Evaluating graduate political science programs via teaching awards
Unformatted Document Text:  (Table 1 here) The top teaching award producing graduate departments are the University of Chicago, Indiana University, Yale, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Harvard, which have traditionally been some of the top research institutions in the country. In fact, five of the top eight teaching award producers, (Chicago, Yale, Harvard, Berkeley, Columbia) were identified by Matsuoka et al (2007a) as ‘Big Eight’ institutions—institutions that have traditionally produced the greatest numbers of PhDs. An argument could be made that because these institutions have produced so many PhDs, they have also produced a high number of award recipients by extension. Additionally, because of these institutions’ historical emphasis on research productivity it may be the case that such institutions better prepare their graduates for faculty roles at similar institutions, such as other research intensive/extensive institutions—but not necessarily at primarily undergraduate institutions Table 2 reports the rankings for only those teaching awards that were given at non-research 1 (using the Carnegie Classification) institutions. Although only teaching awards were examined in this analysis, given the generally greater weight and emphasis placed on teaching at non research intensive/extensive institutions, it is useful to examine the extent to which program prepare their graduates at primarily teaching institutions. In this table, Indiana, Ohio State University, the University of Chicago, the University of California-Berkeley, Columbia, and Wisconsin remain at the top, while Harvard, and Yale, drop .. Of Matsuoka et al ‘s (2007a) ‘Big Eight’ institutions, only three remain in the top eight rankings when accounting for teaching awards at non-research I institution. 7

non-research 1 (using the Carnegie Classification) institutions. Although only teaching
