Unformatted Document Text:  Playing with Numbers: Bringing Statistics to Life in the Undergraduate Classroom By: Shane Nordyke, Stephanie Moulton, and Becky Nesbit Abstract This paper provides an overview of the methods and techniques we have used to actively engage our students in learning basic statistical methods. Having all taught Statistical Techniques in the past, the three of us collaborated to develop assignments which would make the material both more interesting and useful to students the next time we taught the course. This is a summarization of these efforts and their results. The focus of the paper is the student developed survey and analysis project that we implemented across three sections of this course. The paper explains all of the materials and methods employed in creating and implementing this project which allowed students to go beyond textbook data and actually generate, describe, manipulate, test, and analyze data which they collected. We include a review of our experience with other in class group activities we have employed, such as the terrorism database search and Coca Cola experiment. We also include a discussion of our results using these techniques and an analysis of the student feedback we received.

Abstract
