Fostering Active Learning in Research Methods Courses Through the Use of Survey Research Projects
Unformatted Document Text:  11 approaches in research methods courses (Brown, Cox, and Richards 2007). Indeed, pedagogic styles and teaching tools that educators believe to be useful may fall short of effectiveness from the learners’ perspective. Last semester, I administered exit surveys to assess the overall effectiveness of the survey research project (see Appendix, Form F). Students evaluated each of the sets of tasks or milestones on a “degree of difficulty” scale from one to seven, with one being “no problem” and seven being “extremely difficult.” Exit survey results are presented in the figure and table below. Figure 1 indicates that students, on average, found most of the research project tasks near the middle of the seven point scale. Selecting an idea and administering the questionnaire were judged to be the easiest tasks to perform, which is not surprising given the relatively minimal academic strain involved. On the other side of the “degree of difficulty” spectrum, data analysis and working on a research team were determined to be the most difficult tasks, with mean scores at or above the middle value.
