Group Assignment and Topic Selection
The second week of the semester, students are randomly assigned to groups of
eight or nine members. Each group member is expected to contribute throughout the
semester, culminating in the final product of a group presentation on an original research
question. The base level requirement for each member is the collection of data from at
least twenty respondents. The initial group meeting coincides with a class exercise that
requires students identify two “fascinating” research questions. These personal research
statements effectively serve as “getting to know you” ice-breaker devices as each group
member shares his or her personal research interests with the rest of the group.
Hopefully, along the way, common interests are discovered, or at least lines of
conversation are opened and collegiality built.
The only formal assignment of this initial session is topic selection. Each team
commits to a working topic by way of consensus agreement and posts a topic statement
to the group’s online discussion forum. This is a fairly open-ended pursuit. I only
